The White Lion Royal Hotel is situated in Bala, an attractive and
lively historic market town within the boundaries of Snowdonia National
Park (designated an area of outstanding natural beauty).
Straddling
the A494 Dolgellau road, The White Lion Royal Hotel is ideally situated
for touring North and Mid Wales. One would have difficulty finding
a location as well situated as the Bala area.
We are within an hour's spectacular drive of most of the coastal
resorts of Mid and North Wales, not to mention the innumerable beauty
spots and magnificent views within the interior of this beautiful
region.
There are interesting shops, inns, restaurants and an intriguing
historical Town Walk. The area's main attraction is Bala Lake or
Llyn Tegid, the largest natural lake in Wales, bordered by beautiful
scenery and a narrow-gauge railway that attracts thousands of visitors
each year.
The lake is inhabited by the gwyniad, a white fish of the salmon
family unique to Llyn Tegid. One legend says the lake was created
because of the cruelty of the wild lord, Tegid Foel. A harpist at
a palace banquet heard a voice warning "vengeance has come"
and was led away by a bird to a hilltop. When he awoke in the morning
there was a huge lake where the palace had been.
